Hi, I'd love to try UFOET, was a huge fan of original XCOMs, but can't determine if it's compatible with Win 8. Is it, or if not, can anybody help me make it so?

It does not work under windows 8.
Well the game starts and all but as soon as you shoot down your first ufo, the game crashes.
The only sollution to this is is to disable sound.
As can be read on the Steam thread by the way. many people complaining about this after buying it on a windows 8 machine.

Maybe try using "Compatibility mode"?

Solution - Windows 8 Crash Fix (dmsynth.dll problem)

1. Go to "Steam\steamapps\common\UFO Extraterrestrials Gold\DirectX9"
2. With an extraction tool, open the file "DirectX.cab" and extract the file "dmsynth.dll"

dmsynth.dll - - - version 4.9.0.900

3. Go to "C:\Windows\System32" and backup/rename the file "dmsynth.dll" (v6.3.9600.17415). To do this you will need to change the file ownership and change it's permissions.

4. Replace it with the older version from step 2.
